A new way to see which shows drive sign-ups

For most of television history, ratings have been the core metric. By knowing how many people watched a show, programmers could fine tune their schedules accordingly with tailored blocks of programming. But in a streaming-first world, the art of daypart scheduling has given way to the skill of library-building. Today, streamers and studios need to understand the acquisition lift specific programming creates. This approach can inform programming decisions that move the needle for streamers, while also providing creators a new way to quantify the impact their work has on the audiences that streamers value most.

Antenna has developed a new way to evaluate the role programming plays in streaming: Show Premiere Acquisition. Shows are evaluated relative to their premiere dates, enabling an apples-to-apples comparison of how many of a service's new sign-ups viewed specific programming.

By that measure, Antenna estimates that Widow's Bay drove roughly 680K Sign-ups to Apple TV in its first 91 days — about 2.6x the roughly 263K that Hacks drove to HBO Max over the same window. Both comedies premiered in April 2026 as streaming exclusives, and both were nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 2026 Emmys, making them an unusually direct comparison.

According to Antenna estimates, Apple TV recorded roughly 1.7M total Sign-ups in April 2026 and HBO Max roughly 2.3M, so both titles launched into services that were actively adding subscribers. While HBO Max delivered a greater volume of overall sign-ups for the month, Widow’s Bay drove more acquisition with more new subscribers viewing the show within their first week following sign-up.

Hacks returned for its fifth and final season, and premiere curves count only viewers who newly signed up to watch. Much of its audience had already subscribed — for earlier seasons or other programming — so those viewers fall outside the measure by design. Widow's Bay, a first-season debut, drew subscribers watching for the first time, precisely what Show Premiere Acquisition is built to capture.

As awards season sharpens attention on this year's nominees, looking at the acquisition power of a show adds a dimension to a conversation usually shaped by buzz and betting odds. It measures not how many people watched a title, but how many subscribers it brought in — a newer question, and for anyone valuing programming, often the more useful one.
